Local petition is all very laudable but.......

"AN ALTERNATIVE TO TUNNEL VISION AT STONEHENGE"

for certain, the petition on Change.org is gaining signatures by the minute and would seem to be, on the face of it, the best and cheapest option, but we need to look at the wider picture here.   Does anyone reading this and who have signed the petition, actually understand the complexity of the situation?    This is no longer about the government agreeing to a particular way of dealing with the problem - that's all in the past and now the petition is playing right into Stonehenge Alliance's hands!

Presently, this group : https://stonehengealliance.org.uk/ and their campaign :
"NO FURTHER DAMAGE TO THE WORLD HERITAGE SITE"
via their off shoot group:
"SAVE STONEHENGE WORLD HERITAGE SITE"
presumably set up so that Stonehenge Alliance themselves would not appear to be connected with the legal challenge.   Their actions have put the whole project to fix the A303 at Stonehenge into stalemate.  As we all know, they have taken the government to court on a technicality regarding what they see as...."damage to the WHS"...... for a quarter of a mile cutting to the western portal!   If you are one of the signees of this petition, and actually believe that Stonehenge Alliance will rest on their laurels, should the government agree to the content of the petition.... which means a 3 mile on-line dual carriageway along side the present A303..... then I'm afraid you are all deluding yourselves.
Having already accrued £88,000 for the previous court case, Stonehenge Alliance will yet again go cap in hand to their supporters all around the world, many of whom don't have a clue where Stonehenge or the WHS is, to yet again go to court, therefore putting the whole project on hold for.....who knows how long?
While the rest of the A303 further west..... Somerset and Devon, are progressing well with getting their bit fixed, and some of that work has already started, their earlier concerns that if the section at Stonehenge were fixed first, would just send the queue further west, are now unfounded.... while we could be "back to square one"
with the tail wagging the dog!!!!

Stonehenge Alliance, who are "Scheme Blockers", have made it clear from the outset that they had NO common ground with Highways England (as they were then), and any other supporters of the Scheme, and the fundamental people should be particularly aware of is that they will object to ANY proposal that would, in their view, impact on the Stonehenge World Heritage Site, i.e. any kind of road over, or under the WHS; so altenative proposals most certainly would be robustly challenged in a more extreme way than they already have with the 'tunnel bit'.
