Quick Fix ideas meeting - 3 - 4 week window!

Whilst the rest of the country looks forward to the summer, and the Met office:www.metoffice.gov.uk say our summers are set to get warmer, we locals to the World Heritage Site of Stonehenge......are dreading it!
The A303, since the closure of the A344 past the monument, and the opening of the new visitor's centre, has been known to queue as far back as Andover at peak times, which has resulted in "rat running" through local villages.  This week, we have in place a "Traffic Flow Monitoring" system to provide a sample of "normal traffic flows" and the system will return again in August to show the increase of vehicles, both on the A303 and the effect on surrounding villages.
Owing to the closure of the A344, gone are the days when you could pitch up at Stonehenge....grab a free photo through the fence, and get on your way ....No! if you want to photograph the monument, you will have to do this via the Stonehenge Visitor's Centre (SVC) which does mean queueing on the A303...maybe!    You must now use the new "Timed Ticket System" from the web site:
www.english-heritage.org.uk/stonehenge and pay £13.90 pp.  If you go to the world heritage site (WHS) on spec....the price is £14.90 and you may not get in!   The alternative is.....the smart phone!!!......on the move photo from Stonehenge Bottom...which, of course, we don't recommend....slow down, eyes and attention off road.....and....wham! or could that be: wizbangblog.com we have a queue of traffic all shunting into one another and we won't mention injuries, deaths, and cost to the local emergancy services!!!
The car park at Stonehenge is free but has shown to be inadequate and regularly over flows causing traffic to back up on the A360 to Longbarrow Roundabout.....(and there-in, lies another major problem)....but to return to the story in hand.... and then on to the already over capacitated A303!   This is why The Good Inspector Lange, who has the headache of looking after policing in this part of Wiltshire, called a
"Multi Agency Meeting" for Stakeholders to throw "quick fix ideas" around, that could be put in place in readiness for the furore starting in 3 weeks time - the Easter break!
Those attending the meeting included representatives from Highways Agency, Wiltshire Council, Wiltshire police, Parish Councils, National Trust and English Heritage, and no meeting would be complete without us at STAG: Stonehenge Traffic Action Group of which there were three of team!   The meeting from our corner, remained quite positive with some good ideas being thrown into the mix.  However, one could not say the same for some of our local Councillors who were hell bent on blame and accusation, instead of getting on with the job in hand, which was to contribute ideas that could be put in place in the 3 - 4 week window we have before the holiday.   Some of them are still reluctant to accept the existence of "The S Word" and embrace the fact that we're all in this for the same end......improving the roads around Stonehenge!
Our new General Manager at Stonehenge: Kate Davies will have to have very broad shoulders now and in the future, if the complaints of mistakes made by English Heritage in the past and prior to her appointment, were anything to go by!
Anyway, to get to more positive stuff: Items put forward were for new more clear signage around the area, electronic signage where the wording can be altered at the tap of a key board.  There was a suggestion to take SVC traffic off at Countess Roundabout, and up through Larkhill to join the visitor's centre from Bustard Cross Roads therefore relieving the A303 past the monument.  This seemed to me to be a compromise which, at this time is something we all need if we are to get a temporary fix to our present problem, but the idea went down like a lead balloon with Councillors for the area.   Repeater signs on the A303 as far back as the junction of A303/M3 was another idea put forward warning drivers on the A303 of "queues ahead" or even Stonehenge Visitor's "Car Park Full".....which may or may not be useful because this will mean drivers will resort to "rat running" as per instructions on their satellite navigation systems.
When on the subject of drivers snatching a photo of Stonehenge whilst on the move along the A303 came up, it was suggested that a "BUND" might be the answer......Bund: basically, a large mound of earth which would shield the WHS from the road and prevent these irks from endangering life and limb!!   Not really a "quick fix" tho' since the area east of the Stones drops away and even a temporary "bund" would mean many tons of earth to a height of approx 70 meters or 230ft!!! not to mention the earth moving equipment that would be required to build it.
Anyway, there's a few people I could mention who would not be happy with a "Bund" because it might just prevent this happening on June 21st.....!!!!

Watch Bustard says....a quart doesn't fit into a pint pot!!!

Watch Bustard's been out on the A303 again and tells us.....this is just an ordinary Sunday afternoon east bound at Longbarrow roundabout - not a Bank Holiday, not a Bar Mitzvah, nor even Yom Kippur, tho' you might not think that!
The A303 has long had it's problems with weekend traffic and Watch Bustard was able to cope, but  since the closure of the A344 prior to dualling the A303 past the World Heritage Site of Stonehenge.....poor Watch Bustard's been in a bit of a flap!!

Look what he spotted at 16.50 yesterday, whilst trying to cross Longbarrow roundabout......
This traffic can't proceed onto the roundabout.....'cos it's blocked, so W B can't get down the A360 to meet one of his wives however desperate he may be....oh dear! will this affect the breeding program of the Great Bustard on Salisbury Plain??!
greatbustard.org/life_project/life-bird-news

Why are you blocking the roundabout my friend....you can't go anywhere!?
<<<<<<

Watch the silver Audi.....this vehicle is headed east but is in the A360 lane for south bound traffic......By doing this, does the driver think he/she can steal a march on stopped traffic?Lane discipline.....where has it gone?

The Audi can just be seen through the window on the drivers side....still in the wrong lane!!!

Please....will you sign our petition to get the A303 dualled past Stonehenge and beyond at:

STAG apologises to General Manager at Stonehenge Visitor's Centre!

This blog is a general update of things happening with STAG: Stonehenge Traffic Action Group!   Sometimes....there's nothing happening for a few days or even weeks and then..... (please excuse the pun) the flood gates open, and so they did at the end of February.   Apart from getting on with our own lives, around the same time we found out that John Glen MP for Salisbury, had secured the 90 minute debate at Westminster Hall and of course, we were delighted to receive this news, which basically sent us all into a spin.  Watch Bustard had been out on the A303 gathering useful information and the Stag Team continue to attend meetings of various kinds.  One such meeting earlier in the month was with the attendance of the General Manager of Stonehenge Visitor's Centre - Kate Davies - a very successful meeting.....see my previous blog: "New Management at Stonehenge making an Effort".   While e-mails were flying around our team as to our presence at, and actions following the 90 minuted debate, in comes this letter from Kate Davies referring to our earlier successful meeting but......unfortunately, in all the furore, it was missed off the blog, and for this we apologise to her and to anyone who regularly keeps up with this blog!  The letter is precise and informative as to what English Heritage have/will do to amend previous faux pas.......

We at STAG hope that this will set the record straight and that we can continue to build on this new and  better relationship for the same successful end which is to improve the A303 around Stonehenge and on down the A303/A30/A358 corridor to allow free movement of traffic whether it be local, business or tourist!

Please help us do this by signing our Parliamentary petition at:
www.sh2.co.uk and remember to confirm your signature when you receive the return e-mail or your vote will not be included!

John Glen MP - A303 Matters in PoliticsHome..

Along with the sterling service our MP, John Glen achieved on Tuesday last,

he has been busy since, writing in various mags and newspapers.   Here is just a taster from:

Conservative MP for Salisbury John Glen has tabled a Westminster Hall debate on the future of the A303. After £43 million spent on feasibility studies he says it is now time for action.
Read more here: http://www.politicshome.com/
In a rare moment of cross party agreement, John also said: "I happen to entirely share the view of the former Secretary of State for Transport, the right hon. Member for Edinburgh South West when he said: "let’s have no further examinations and re-examinations and reviews – let’s get on with it"!    Darling....you were on our side, but nothing came of it unfortunately!!!.....
The very same Alistair Darling, now heading up the "Better Together Campaign" for Scotland to stay in Britain!!!  Yes!

On the right track at Westminster!

Following on from my previous blog that John Glen MP johnglenmp.com secured a 90 minute debate in Westminster, all about the A303 and what needs to be done to dual/tunnel this beleaguered road and how the government can provide funds for the much needed improvement for the route to the West Country.....
a brilliant job done today John!   Many thanks from us all at STAG and we speak for local people too!   I have listened to all 90 minutes of the debate when MP's from all the way down the A303/A358/A30 corridor were present.  STAG did have "Their Man on The Ground" at Westminster Hall today....in STAGman!
Whilst he will make a full report tomorrow - is probably banging it out on a lap top on the train as we speak, he did say this :
"In short, a positive session, in which all agreed the imperative economic need, but many procedural hoops to jump through before we know what the consultation will bring.  There is a general view (John included) that a long bore tunnel is much more achievable/acceptable now than it was 10 years ago: financially, technically, socially and arechaeologically."

Robert Goodwill MP Under Secretary of State for Transport, acknowledged STAG as a campaign, set out some early solutions and we should learn more as early as the autumn of this year.....here is a letter he wrote to our MP this week:

I particularly liked the bit when he said "while moneys are distributed accross the country for roads, "the A303, is in the final of this competition"

If you would like to listen/watch the debate follow this link: http://www.parliamentlive.tv/Main/Player.aspx?meetingId=14925 it's 90 minutes of your time tho'!!

So! it's official.....the "S" word is gaining momentum as a campaign in its own right and this can only get better the more attention we get from media including newspaper, T.V. and radio!  This is the link for the radio interviews this morning with both John Glen MP and Justin Heath of the STAG team: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p01s2f7v No longer available here, but can be reached at: www.johnglenmp.com!

If you haven't already signed our petition, you can do so here on www.sh2.co.uk and please remember to confirm having done so or your vote will not be included.

More musings from.....Watch Bustard!

Before coming to Wiltshire - perhaps to visit Stonehenge,
Watchbustard advises that you update maps on your remote satellite navigation systems.   I say this because, when
Watchbustard was out on the A303 yesterday, flying in an easterly direction he encountered our tourist in the hire car!!.....Left indicator blinking at Stonehenge Bottom, slowing down - almost to a stop....."why no road here" or could that be...... なぜここには道路ません!
The A344 was closed last June to accommodate the new Stonehenge Visitor's Centre and you now have to follow the signs off Longbarrow roundabout......A344 は現在、ストーンヘンジでの新しいビジターセンターに対応するために閉鎖した。あなたはLongbarrowロータリーから看板に従わなければなりません! It appears that "roundabout" in Japanese, is a square!!
Watch Bustard speaks and can write many languages....we always knew he was a.......

Thank you,
to Watch Bustard....this could make for a very serious situation at Stonehenge Bottom during the busier times!!!
Please help us dual the A303 and sign our petition at: www.sh2.co.uk but remember to confirm when the e-mail is sent to you.....thank you!
