A303 - not fit for purpose!

We at STAG: Stonehenge Traffic Action Group
keep banging on about why the A303....as a main arterial route to the West Country, not only for tourism, but also for businesses...needs to be dualled.  It's just not fit for purpose when we look at these photos of 2 earth movers which had to be transported on the A303 through Winterbourne Stoke!
And our photographer managed to get in our sh2 placard too!!
Visit www.sh2.co.uk and sign our petition please and remember to confirm using the follow up e-mail....thanks

Peaceful Protest update!

A peaceful protest took place on 17th & 18th December to coincide with the opening of the New Visitors Centre/Tin Shed!   The reason for our protest was because of the closure of the A344 before dualling the A303
So!..The wheels on the cars went round and round, the wheels on the cars went round and round....and so did the coffin!  I lost count how many times we circumnavigated Longbarrow and Airmans Cross roundabouts, but it was such fun!
Thanks to everyone who gave up their time to turn out on both days....On the morning of 17th, I believe we had a cortege of 18 cars and 9 on

the 18th too, with balloons flying, signs on all the cars and loud tasteless music playing....PC Plod was so pleased with our behaviour, we got lots of smiles and thumbs up!   The Japanese taking photos of us and even the Wiltshire Council boys, doing the dotted lines at Longbarrow took photos...dotted lines?...there in lies another problem!!!
We had press coverage from Spire FM, BBC Wiltshire Radio and Salisbury Journal - thanks to all of them.

A344 we're sad to see you go!

Please sign our parliamentary petition on www.sh2.co.uk please remember to confirm using the follow up e-mail....thanks!

English Heritage...stuff you'll never hear them say

S.T.A.G. says: Terminology you will never hear from ENGLISH HERITAGE: www.english-heritage.org.uk/

Oops! We got it wrong, didn't we??
You are right and Yes, we were wrong!
We're soooooo sorry!
We shouldn't have closed that A344....we now realise it's causing havoc.....like you said it would!
We admit we're totally out of step with local opinion!
It will be a pleasure to see local residents for our opening on 18th December!!!!
We really appreciate your input and we do listen....acknowledge, then ignore and make a positive statement.
Putting the A303 in a tunnel is a very bad idea.
Our ideas with reference to access to Stonehenge Visitor's Centre are rubbish and we should have listened...but we're stuck with it now!
We're always ready to admit our mistakes....
We have comprehensively screwed up on Sir Cecil Chubb's legacy!
Sir Jocelyn Stevens was wrong and he will admit this soon.....

STAGa303 Meetings b----y meetings

STAG creator has attended meetings, meetings and yet more meetingsMeetings attended by over 150 people - the subject on everyone's mind....Dual the A303 now to make our villages safer!  Meetings to open up STAG to the villages around the area with everyone agreeing to "do their bit"....putting out flyers, printing and laminating posters, giving their time....if you were in one of the cars held up on the A303 last Saturday, and finally got to the top of the hill at West Amesbury where it goes to single carriageway before the monument, and accepted my flyer, thanks for taking it and I hope you've already signed our petition.
To continue the meetings...with MP's and Councillors of the area and John Glen MP appears to be making our plight a priority and has even mentioned STAG in parliament...pity the Leader of the House was stuck in our queue in August...do we care...of course we care.
My letter printed www.salisburyjournal.co.uk on 17.10.13 asked the question of English Heritage: you must have been involved at the planning stage of changes to the local topography, but yet, you didn't appear to understand that due to the closure of the A344, anyone needing to head north to villages/towns and beyond, who would have used the A344, must now remain on the A303 for another mile to Longbarrow roundabout and join the queue for those intending to visit Stonehenge Visitors Centre!!!......Next summer will be a nightmare for us! Unfortunately, Highways Agency didn't  see the need for a dedicated route off Longbarrow roundabout to the "New Visitor's Centre". Where's the logic? I hear there's to be yet another feasibility study for dualling the A303....H A, you've just spent £43million of tax payers money on previous feasibility studies - where are they...mis filed?    OK! we need to decide how to go forward with STAG so, yet another meeting and this time STAG has not one, but two guardian angels to carry it forward to the next stage....take a look at: www.bypasswinterbournestoke.blogspot.co.uk
Update at 13.11.13....Due to a change of MP as Under Secretary of State...the new Minister Robert Goodwill www.gov.uk/government/people/robert-goodwill - will not now be coming to Shrewton to discuss the future of the A303 because "as a new kid on the block" his diary is clogged with other more pressing issues!  He has however, put autority to Highways Agency to adjust the road markings at Longbarrow roundabout....so we shall see when that happens....
Yet another meeting last evening 21st November - Amesbury Area Board where the Longbarrow road sign adjustments were confirmed.   Progress to increase the weight limit in Shrewton from 2 tons to 7.5 tons, so the entry on STAG site www.shrewton.com is having some effect.  A "SLOW" sign at the entry to Shrewton from London Road, has been proposed.
Another 2 STAG meetings Saturday 23rd  and 30th: to start the arrangements for our "Peaceful Protest" for the opening of the new visitors centre on press day 17th!  We feel it's coming together and will have to seek advice from our local Police Inspector to keep everything legal and correct.
Another day, another meeting!  On Tuesday 3rd December, two representatives of The National Trust kindly gave up their evening time and we had a very positive meeting with 5 members of the STAG team in attendance.  We as locals, now feel that at last someone is prepared to listen and that something might just be done.   We realise there is no "quick fix" and we're in this for the long term but at least we now feel we have partners with whom we can work.   Many things need to be considered - not the least the environment and topography around the WHS where much of the land is owned by the National Trust.  Possible routing was discussed and what can be done in the meantime to make our villages safer at the same time giving respect to our beautiful County of Wiltshire.

Monday 21 October 2013

I created STAG because....

English Heritage got their way and the A344 was closed past Stonehenge in June, to accomodate the new Stonehenge Visitor's Centre which opens 18th December.   The closure of this road should not have taken place prior to dualling of the A303!  We always had a problem at weekends and holidays with traffic cutting through our village, but the closure of this road made things much worse and has created traffic build up on the A303 backed up to the top of Beacon Hill at weekends and on into Hampshire on school holidays and bank holiday weekends.
Thanks to:www.westerndailypress.co.uk for this picture
The result - and who can blame them - is East and West bound traffic using sat nav to short cut the queue on the A303 past Stonehenge causing a rat run situation in the villages around the area. Look at the queues, not just on the A303 but in our village.   Vehicles include low loaders, HGVs and even a double furniture van using our narrow High Street which has a 2 ton weight limit and very little pavement to speak of... and for local people, this is dangerous and we cannot go about our day to day business. Read all about it on www.shrewton.com and the diary of events.
On this day, I decided we must start a petition to dual the A303 - and so....a STAG was born on 22.08.13.
STAG: Stonehenge Traffic Action Group  visit: www.sh2.co.uk to sign the petition!
Our slogan: HS2 UNPROVEN JAM TOMORROW....SH2 (stonehenge dual) LOSE THE JAM TODAY!

As if we needed more evidence that the A303 needs to be dualled, especially a by pass around Winterbourne Stoke, some new pictures have just arrived in my inbox, taken at 14.54 on Thursday 14th November......2 earth movers awaiting clearance from on-coming traffic.   We estimate it would have taken them one and ahlf hours to go 4 miles on our single carriageway, creating a huge queue - the A303 is no longer fit for purpose!!

Please sign our parliamentary petition at: www.sh2.co.uk and confirm using the follow up e-mail....thanks!

A303 dual now please - sign the petition!

The petition is to get the Pundets to look at our dire situation and whilst we agree that the whole of the A303 needs to be dualled, the first part at Stonehenge should be considered first off since, if there's a bottleneck at Stonehenge, nobody's going anywhere!  In just 8 weeks, we have over a 1200 signatures on line and foot fall paper signees.   We held a signing weekend in the village of Shrewton on 5th & 6th October and realised almost 300 signs during that weekend....see the photos, which include the future of Shrewton.  We had media cover from Wiltshire Radio, BBC South Today and Salisbury Journal.  STAG would like to thank everyone who turned out to support our cause to dual the A303 and those who helped with the campaign during that weekend. In just 12 weeks, we have over 1200 signatures!
You can sign  the petition at: www.shrewton.com
Click STAG: Stonehenge Traffic Action Group
or visit: www.sh2.co.uk but please remember to confirm using the follow up
e-mail....thanks
But it doesn't stop there....STAG intends to evolve and step up a gear now that we have this blog to reach a wider audience.   We all know that if the dualling is not agreed soon, next summer will be a nightmare for locals businesses and tourists alike. Check out: bypasswinterbournestoke.blogspot.com
